Information security involves the protection of information assets including intellectual capital, in any form from espionage, competitive intelligence, theft, damage, compromise and alteration. Protection is from acts committed by a competitor seeking an advantage to foreign governments, domestic and foreign agencies, and other adversaries. Where physical assets were considered as the basis for valuing a business, today they have been replaced by information and intellectual capital - and most companies undervalue those assets and consequently fail to adequately protect them.
